It is a rarity in antique Scottish jewelry to find it in gold, especially 15k. This brooch, called a dirk, is designed as a replica of the weapon. It was used to fasten the kilts, but of course today its use is varied and enjoyed by women as well as men. Perhaps one of the finest examples, this brooch is signed Atchison. I believe Atchinson to be the name of the jeweler. The gold work, as would be expected is the finest, as is the engraving. Note the unusual design of the collar holding the top smoky quartz. The patina is rich and the color is that of 18k. The three smoky quartz stones are cut to look like the Scottish national flower, the thistle. The agates are traditional colors,Montrose gray, bloodstone and jasper. The reverse has all original mounts and pinstem. It measures 3 inches in length x 1/2 at the widest point. The condition is mint. Scottish jewelry at its finest, circa 1860 |
