This large, antique Scottish agate silver brooch is circa 1880. It is a traditional design called a penannular, or split ring, and was used to adorn the tartans. Queen Victoria's love of Balmoral Castle, and the traditions of its people was equally matched by the enthusiasm of the populace. If the Queen wore Scottish jewelry, so did the people. Thus this industry grew and some wonderful pieces of jewelry were created. This penannular is not only grand in stature, but in its fine execution. The choice and placement of agates were skillfully done, and the final product is amazingly beautiful. The top thistle, rendered in a finely cut citrine is set in a beautiful, simply engraved mount. In addition to the large citrine, are two faceted citrines and a pale faceted amethyst. All three are set in closed backs and foiled beneath the stone to reflect the light. Each agate is cut en cabachon and divided by fine strips of silver. The pin measures a very bold 2 7/8 inches long, from the top of the thistle x 2 1/4 inches across. The reverse is also finely finished, and has traditional engraving work. The condition is excellent and it is completely original. Wear this on a sweater, jacket or coat and imagine the heather and the Scottish mist. Beauty, circa 1880. |
