This antique Scottish agate ribbon brooch is circa 1880. Most of the brooches from this period are traditional and those that are figural, like this one, are rarer to find. I have sold this form of brooch before, but this is a variation in color and sculptural quality. In this brooch, the side agates are raised giving the brooch a realistic rendition of a ribbon. The central oval has agates that are cabachon cut and the others inlaid. The colors are soft,gray,salmon,moss agate,mustard all blending one to the other separated by thin silver strips. The brooch measures 2 1/4 inches across x 1.5 inches down. The reverse has the original C-clasp,T-bar and pin stem. The condition is excellent. It is a perfectly proportioned and beautifully designed brooch. Scottish, circa 1880 |
