This strikingly beautiful Victorian garnet heart is dated 1855. It is designed with a large cabachon garnet that is surrounded by leaves and flowers rendered in rose diamonds. The diamonds are set in silver topped gold and finely faceted for maximum refraction of light. The heart is set 15k gold and has the original rich patina. The reverse reveals a locket which could house a momento, or lock of hair. The back has original engraving "Ernie n Lorie Nov 23 1855." The engraving can be removed if desired, but adds such charm and provenance. The removable bail is original to the pendant, and it too is set with rose cut diamonds. The gold work is finely detailed and the diamond surround is all done by hand. Each flower has dimension and comes alive with light and sparkle. The use of garnets in jewelry has spanned the centuries as it has a rich, mellow hue that complements most skin tones. In this example, it is cut en cabachon, which when foiled below maximizes the light passing through the stone, and creates a beautiful glow. It measures 1 3/8 inches long with the bail x 1 inch across. The heart alone is 1 1/8 inches long. Worn close to the neck, or on a longer chain, it is dramatic, yet subtle in its beauty. It is all original and in excellent condition. English in origin, circa 1850. |
