Antique Scottish Gold Citrine Heart

This dramatic Scottish 15k gold heart is circa 1860. The motif, a heart surmounted by a crown, symbolizes love and loyalty. The gold is hand engraved and has a decorative surround of fleur de lys. The use of the fleur de lys symbolizes the Auld Alliance of 1295 between France and Scotland. Mary Queen of Scots grew up in France and became Queen at the tender age of 17. She became Queen of Scotland after sustaining great personal loss, and the years that followed were tragic. She was beloved by her people and this form of heart is often called, The Mary Queen of Scots heart.

I have personally collected these hearts for many years as I loved both the symbolism and the beauty of the form. In this example, the gold has a rich patina,is finely executed and beautifully engraved. The natural citrine is well proportioned and rich in hue. It measures 2 2/8 inches from the top loop x 1 1/8 across the widest span. The condition is all original and it is in excellent condition.

Given as a gift to a loved one, or to yourself, its beauty defies the passage of time. It would grace a simple chain, a black cord, or a ribbon. Symbolic, beautiful, timeless, circa 1860
