Fine Antique French Bresse Enamel Earrings
Incredibly beautiful antique French enamel earrings, circa 1880. Enameling as an art form to enhance jewelry has been used throughout the centuries. Every region has its own style, and each artisen his own hand print. Bresse enamel, or emaux bressans, has a distinctive beauty. It is created in a district of eastern France called Bourg en Bresse.

The late 19th century often called Belle Epoque, or beautiful era, was a period of opulence and there was a resurgence of interest in the Renaissance and 18th century styles. The small enamel industry in Bresse flourished and some incredibly fine jewelry and objects were created using glass enamel with bead encrusted colored pastes. The enamel was placed on top of embossed silver or metal, creating a multi-textured effect. The use of gold leaf gilding and fine detailing gives Bresse enamel an appearance unlike any other.

In this example, the earrings are large and dramatic, mirroring the girandole form of the 18th century. The earrings, set in silver, are unusually fine and the colors playful, yet elegant. I find it interesting to note that the enamel work is even more beautiful on close scrutiny. The earrings measure a long 2 3/4 inches from the top of the wire x 1 1/6 across. The enamel is all original and in excellent condition. The silver work too is superior and in excellent condition as well. The silver wires may be a replacement, but is a perfect match in patina and balance of the drops.

Only once before had Bresse enamel earrings offered for sale, and never as beautiful or detailed.
