This is a superb example of Victorian jewelry. It is a necklace, or collar, designed in the classical manner of Giuliano and Castellani. A similar example is pictured in Ginny Dawes book, Victorian Jewelry, page 31. In this example silver links are smoothly finished and have finely textured terminals. The center of each link is adorned with a popular Victorian motif, a star punch. The silver work is very beautiful and the patina rich and original. The necklace measures 18 3/4 inches long x 3/4 inches wide. It has a large spring ring closure enabling the wearer to join a locket , or wear it as seen. The condition is excellent and all original. The back has several small pin head dings, otherwise perfect. This is an elegant, beautifully designed necklace which is as fresh and wearable today, as it was 130 years ago. English, circa 1880 |
