| This very lovely garnet, diamond ring is English, circa 1800. It has a central almandine garnet, flat cut and finely faceted around the edges. The stone has been foiled and then set in hand crimped collets. The foiling reflects light adding a beautiful hue,as stones of this period were typically closed in the back. The shoulders are set with small rose cut diamonds, also foiled and set in crimped collets. Garnets have been used through the centuries and gained great popularity in the 18th and 19th century. The stone was believed to have protective powers and often presented to loved ones. The back of the garnet is beautifully finished with the radiating pattern on the gold seen on many early Georgian rings. The gold is 18k and has a mellow, original patina. The ring is in excellent condition and is a size 6 1/4 US. Small in scale and elegant on the finger, this is lovely worn alone or in multiples. Georgian women would wear many rings at the same time and several on one finger. Distinctive and beautiful, circa 1800,England | ||||||||
