Antique Victorian Scottish earrings, circa 1880. They are sterling and set with a central faceted citrine that is prong set and surrounded by small flat cut stones that are bezel set. The central citrine is open to the light and is bright and rich in color. The others are set in closed backs and foiled to reflect the light. These have a beautiful mellow color. The top section too, has a closed bezel set stone with the same coloration as the central citrine. The colors of the small surrounding stones are amethyst, garnet and citrine. These small stones were not tested, but were commonly pastes. This design, almost a wheel, is quite traditional and appears in many antique Scottish brooches. Two of the small stones have tiny, tiny edge chips seen only under magnification, otherwise excellent condition. Both the top and bottom sections are engraved. The bottom section, which articulates freely, is tubular in form with softly rounded edges. They measure 1 7/8 inches long from the top wire x 5/8 across the bottom drop. Finding antique Scottish earrings to complement the early jewelry is always a challenge. These work beautifully with the Scottish brooches and bracelets of the 19th century, as well as any Victorian silver jewelry. Scotland, circa 1880 |
