These earrings are simply wonderful. Originally Georgian cuff buttons, they have been converted to earrings with the addition of gold wires. The smoky quartz are large, beautifully faceted and set in hand crimped gold settings. The stones are foil backed creating the rich hue of topaz. The color has hints of brown and warm golden tones. Foiling during this period, was used to enhance the color of the stone as they were characteristically set with closed backs. The gold work is well done and the bulbous backs have the radiating pattern seen in Georgian jewelry. The color and size makes this a most wearable and elegant earring. The stone is 12 mm or slightly greater than 1/2 inches. Length is 3/4 inches from the top of the gold wires. The condition is generally excellent with slight surface scratching on the stone visible with a loop. These are distinctly beautiful. Georgian, circa 1820 |
