This antique Japanese shakudo chain is circa 1880. The Samurai warriors wore beautiful swords and fittings designed with the metal art of Shakudo. The name defines the art of utilizing mixed metals to create an art form. The use of copper with gold, silver and metal alloys was perfected by the metal workers who decorated the Samurai swords. In 1876 the Emperor Meiji declared a law abolishing the wearing of swords. This ended the approximately 1000 year proud , powerful history of the Samurai. Along with this decree ended the usefulness of the Shakudo artisans. Trying to survive, they created necklaces, bracelets etc. out of the remnants of the dismantled swords. Many items such as this were created by these artisans to appeal to the Western market. Sadly, the industry came to a halt and the art form that had been perfected through the centuries was ended. The items created are now recognized and eagerly collected.
This long chain measures an extra long 56 inches plus a bale x 1/8 inches wide. The chain is made of a a motif of tiny joined chrysanthemums of mixed metal. The flower is the symbol of the sun representing strength, longevity and joy. In Japan, the Emperor's position is referred to as the Chrysanthemum Throne and its crest is the flower. Chains rarely appear, and if located they are smaller lengths, often small watch chains. Here, it is completely original and can be worn long, doubled, or wrapped three times around the neck. The chain can be joined with a watch fob, or any pendant. Here, it was originally designed with a beautifully carved gemstone of a stylized fig and leaf, symbolizing enlightenment. The top of the stone is joined with a handmade solid gold, openwork design of chrysanthemums. This matches the design of the chain. The stones is a beautiful lemon color with fine natural inclusions. The pendant itself measures 2 inches long x 1 inch across x 3/4 inches in depth. The condition is excellent. I have only had one long chain of this quality in over twenty years. It is beautiful as a piece of jewelry, but made even more distinctive by its rich history. Japan, 19th century. |
