This is a lovely Scottish amethyst heart, circa 1880. It is designed with a beautiful heart shaped amethyst, surmounted by a 15k gold crown. The gold work is hand engraved and finely detailed decorated with rope edge and fleur de lis. The rich patina is original, and the crown is identically finished, both front and back. This form , is often called the Mary Queen of Scots heart. Mary's tragic life was short, but she remains beloved by her people. The design of the fleur de lis symbolizing the Auld Alliance with France, is symbolic of the loyalty of a Queen, as well as her ties to France. In Scotland she is called Queen of Scots, in France, Mary Stuart. It measures 1 5/8 inches from the top loop x 3/4 inches across the heart. This size makes it easily worn on a ribbon, chain or cord for day or evening wear. Just lovely and in excellent condition. A modern black cord with 14k gold clasp will be provided as seen. Scotland, circa 1880 |
