Incredibly lovely, these 18th century earrings are foil back and set in hand crimped rub over settings. The color of the foil makes the coloration quite amazing. The perimeter stones are set with pale pink foil and the central stone with a very, very pale yellowish green, almost the color of chrysoberyl. Foil placed beneath a stone was used to enhance the color and the reflection of light as stones were set with closed backs during this period of time. The result is a marvelous mellow hue that varies with every movement. They are bright and especially lovely in the evening light. The design is a flower head, with each small finely faceted paste resembling a petal. The reverse shows the beautiful scalloped silver work. These started life as cloak buttons and have now been expertly converted to earrings with the addition of gold wires. They measure slightly over 3/4 inches long from the top of the wire, larger and more dramatic than others I have offered for sale. There is a slight difference in size, one flower head measuring 16mm and one measuring 15.5 mm. The stones are completely original and they are in excellent condition. These are 18th century and very beautiful. |
