This incredibly beautiful diamond pendant is English, circa 1840. It is backed in a pale rose gold, and studded with diamonds set in silver. The gold work is superior, and the reverse is gently curved to ensure it lays beautifully on the neck. The diamonds are exceptionally fine quality old mine cuts. The dot seen in some of the photos is the characteristic "black" dot which is the culet of early mine cut stones, as the facets join at the bottom and terminate with a flat cut. The central diamond is approximately 1 carat, with the other diamonds ranging from 2pts to 20pts. with a total approximate weight of over 4 carats. The weight is approximate, as the stones have not been removed from their settings. The center stone is an F color VS clarity. The other stones average F-G and are VS/SI. The mine cut diamonds are all minimally different as they were cut by hand, and each stone is slightly out of the round with more of a cushion cut. The diamonds are ablaze with sparkle and the white color adds greatly to the beauty. It measures a large 1 7/8 across and down. It measures 2 3/8 long with the bail. The diamond set bail is removable, and it can then be worn as a brooch. Note the beauty of the bail too, as it is set with diamonds which graduate in size from 2-4pts. The T-Bar and pin stem are original and a safety clasp had been added at some point in its life. All diamonds are original and set in hand crimped rub over collets. The cross comes with the original fitted box. The box itself in disrepair with a faded, tattered silk lining. It does not lock securely, but it adds so much to the charm and fortunately has never been replaced. Rare, elegant, and timeless in appeal, it is in excellent condition. Wear it on a white gold chain or on a ribbon as shown. English, circa 1840 |
