Perhaps the rarest item I have offered for sale, these wonderful earrings are late 18th century Portuguese. Chrysoberyl jewelry, highly desired by collectors have become exceedingly scarce. The stone derived from the Greek words meaning "golden beryl" is a beautiful pale yellow/ green. Each stone is well matched in color , foiled, and meticulously set in silver hand crimped collets. The style is the classic three section pendeloque. Each section articulates and the stones catch the light with each movement. Finding an earring from this period in its original condition is a rarity itself. The aristocracy favored these large dramatic style of jewelry and bold rings, necklaces, and earrings became the fashion statement. The chrysoberyls were imported from from Brazil and were treasured. Upon the death of their husbands, aristocratic women often withdrew to convents to live out their lives and bequeathed their jewels to the church. The jewels are rare to surface for sale and most are in Portuguese Museums. For reference see "Five Centuries of Jewellery National Museum of Ancient Art, Lisbon 1995. These earrings measure a long 3 1/4 inches long x 5/8 across the bottom. They are completely original and in excellent, remarkable condition. They retain the original back to front ear wires. Most of these jewels if ever found, have been broken into parts and then fashioned into earrings. This example is as fine an example as I have had the fortune to sell. They would grace the finest collection. Portuguese, 18th century |
