Through the centuries rings have represented wealth, power, friendship, love and mourning. Bestowed or received, they are a token to be treasured. This example is Spanish, circa 1680. It has the recognizable sculpted gold work, rub over box collets and foil back stones. The geometry is beautiful, and is matched by the superior high carat gold work. The shoulders have a foliate motif joined to an unadorned shank. As a conception, it is a work of art rendered with precision hand work. The crystal stones are foil back and table cut. The reverse of each stone has a bulbous back, typical of this design period. Rings of the 17th century are scarce, and this example is in excellent, all original condition. It is a size 5 3/4 US. Spanish, circa 1680. For similar examples see RINGS, Jewelry of Power,Love and Loyalty, by Diana Scarisbrick |
