Charming clown doll, made circa 1940 by listed IL artist Louise Woodroofe (1892-1996). Ms. Woodroofe, an art professor at the University of Illinois, traveled with the Ringling Bros. circus during summers in the 1930's, and has become well known for her depictions of circus life. Great 14" x 10" marker on paper depicting stylized head, seeming to be Cleopatra, by listed Chicago folk artist Elmer Sanders (b. circa 1915), signed lower left. I know little of Sanders's life, but believe that he became a self-taught artist while serving a prison term in the 1950s at Cook County Jail, exhibiting in the Jailhouse Art shows.
