A very finely carved boxwood figure of a boy sitting astride a buffalo on an equally well carved original stand. The eyes are probably glass and teeth are made of bone. All the fur is beautifully engraved (photo 12).Dating from C19th/ Early C20th., it measures 8 3/8inches ( 21.3 cm) long not including stand. There are some expected age cracks. The rear right leg has been broken and neatly re-stuck and the stand has a piece re-stuck. Also some of the ox's teeth are gone. This sounds a lot, but is hardly noticeable and quality and overall effect remains.

Firstly, let me say I know nothing about old glass (My specialist field is ceramics) so the following description must be red with that in mind.A soda glass or similar flask for pouring olive oil / other condiment. The glass is a bubble suffused green with a band of reddish brown included in the metal. It has a kick-in base and rough pontil. It looks to me to be Roman. It came from the R.H.Hewins collection and I have owned it for over 20 yrs. Dating from Roman times ? it stands 12.7 cm tall. It has a chip to the end of the spout. It is in otherwise good condition.
