Oil Painting Dutch Aert Van Der Neer 1603 - 1677
“Reizigers Rustend Op Het Pad” (“Travellers Resting on the Path”) Oil on board, Aert Van Der Neer (1603 – 1677) signed monogram lower left. Circa 1670s. Dimensions: 21 3/8” X 15 3/8” without frame, 29 ¼” X 23 ¼” with frame. Striking piece with three separate 17th Century English Essex County Tudor Family seals on back (see photo) indicating a provenance of once being owned by the Royal Family. The late 17th Century marked a time of tremendous demand for Dutch paintings with the aristocracy of England which began with The Earl of Bute acquiring an Aelbert Cuyp (1620 – 1691) landscape in the 1760s. Lower left shows two of the Xs in Van Deer Neer’s iconic “XX N” monogram signature (see photo). A Dutch landscape painter, Van Der Neer developed his own style of working with light. Examples of his finest work can be found in the Metropolitan Museum in New York and the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam. Strong demand for Van Der Neer works is demonstrated by recorded public sales of similar pieces in terms of medium, size, topic, execution, style and tonal color scheme including $108,150 for “A Landscape with Figures on a Path Near a Country House” Lot 58 at Sotheby’s Amsterdam on May 18th, 2010 and $310,350 for the smaller “A Village Scene in Winter on a Frozen River” Lot 36 at Sotheby’s London, New Bond St. on July 9th, 2008.
