William Zorach Marble Sculpture "Mother and Child"
"Mother and Child" Marble sculpture, signed and dated by William Zorach (1887 - 1966). Circa 1956. Dimensions: 11.5" long X 9.5" high X 7" deep (not including the stand). Originally from Lithuania, Zorach came to the U. S. and studied at National Academy of Design and later at La Pallete in Paris. Known for his unique interaction with the sculpture's medium, his work his can be found in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Boston Museum of Fine Art, the Los Angeles Museum of Art to name a few. While some Zorach sculptures have sold for over $360,000, a comparable piece in terms of subject and style, (yet less exclusive and not one of a kind like this marble piece) made of bronze so that more than one could be cast from the mold sold for $170,500 "Devotion, Mother and Child" Lot 112 Sotheby's New York on December 1st, 2011.
