Antique Huge 4 ft. 18th C. Shan Burmese Marble Buddha
Large (almost 4 feet long) rare 17th-18th Century Began dynasty Shan Burmese reclining polychromed marble Buddha from north of the Nyaungshwe Valley. This special piece exhibits a balance, form, proportion and grace not found in later sculptures. Don’t confuse this with less elegant, disproportionate newer pieces. This museum quality art piece demonstrates the height of the Shan Began kings artistic culture with characteristic features including triangular face, broad forehead, arched eyebrows over narrow eyes, pointed nose with triangular nostrils, pursed lips, short necks and elongated ears. Remnants of polychrome paint include gold leaf applied to the Buddha’s garb (see close up photos of the garment folds). Provenance: from the estate of a prominent collector and client of Sotheby’s and Christie’s. Iconography: Buddha preaching to his disciples just before death and parinibbana. Circa 1780 – 1820. Length: 46” X Height 14” X Depth 8”.
