| “Moonlit Coastline”, Oil on canvas - Singed. Anton Gutknecht (1907 – 1988). This piece, large (a full 4 ft. X 2 ft.) and sweeping in scope makes you feel as though you are right there on the sand at night. Mr. Gutknecht a listed Artist, was born and died in Dusseldorf, Germany. He studied in Dusseldorf, Munich, and Hamburg, and instructed for many years at Vienna's Royal Academy before moving to southern California where he settled for sometime. Gutknecht traveled extensively over the world, painting a wide variety of subjects. His works have won prizes in international competitions in Vienna, Paris, Rome, Naples, and Venice. His paintings are a mixture of realism with an idealistic beauty. The book titled "Painting Landscapes and Seascapes" brought him recognition in the United States. Mr. Gutknecht’s paintings, especially his seascapes, have enjoyed a strong worldwide demand. While some of Gutknecht’s painting have sold for even more, “Sunset Seascape” - Lot 1043 John Moran Auctioneers, Pasadena, California – a painting similar to this piece only 31% smaller (20” X 40”) – sold for $2,185 ($2.73/sq. in.) on April 17, 2007.
