| “A Mother and Child” oil on canvas, signed by Henry Inman (1801 - 1846). Born in Utica, New York, Henry Inman, the leading portrait painter of his time, lived most of his life in New York City. He is also famous for his landscapes and engravings for books. Inman apprenticed with John Wesley Jarvis, established his own studio, and became the first Vice President of the National Academy of Design. Famous portraits he painted include William Wordsworth and Lord Macaulay. The market for Inman portraits while always strong has become even more in demand including Lot 89 “The Children of Henry Living” at Sotheby’s New York May 22, 1996 which sold for $26,450. Using the price per square inch on the sale of lot 187 “Mother and Child” at Shannon’s Fine Art Auction on April 25, 2002 of $139.39 per square inch, This painting, similar in composition (mother and child) yet larger than the Shannon Auction comparable, would sell for $42,432.
