| “Fields of Surrey” oil on canvas landscape signed “W. L. fec. 1866” William Linton (1791 – 1876) British landscape painter was born in Liverpool and helped found the Society of British Artists, the Old Watercolour Society and New Watercolour Society. Exhibited from 1817-71 at the Royal Academy and Society of British Artists. Published “Ancient and Modern Colours”. Linton’s works are exhibited in museums throughout the world. Demand for his pieces command significant interest including these comparable sales: Sale price $20,689 for Lot 70 “An Italianate landscape, with peasants and livestock in the foreground” at Christie’s London November 23, 2005 and Sale price $18,799 for Lot 20 “A grove scene in the grounds of Lord Northwick's villa at Harrow” at Sotheby's London July 14, 1999.
