Oil Painting Alice Chilton 1870 – 1960 Texas Landscape
“Sunset on Vance Jackson Road” Oil on board, landscape of the countryside around San Antonio, Texas. Signed Alice Chilton lower right corner. The inscription: “Sunset on Vance Jackson Road near Drake’s place” is written verso (see photo) – (referring to the road in San Antonio and the estate of James Frederick Drake (1863-1933), patron of the arts and prominent New York attorney who’s paper’s are kept at the Ransom Research Center in Austin, Texas). This fine work demonstrates Chilton’s hallmark features including Texas Bluebonnet flowers as well as one of her iconic artistic illuminating ethereal Texas sunset skies. This piece brings you right into the feel and mood of this special 1920s time and locale. One of Texas’ finest landscape painters, Alice Chilton exhibited her works at the Artists Annual Exhibition of San Antonio in 1930 and the Coppini Academy of Fine Arts in 1952 and 1958. She was a member of the Coppini Academy. Ms. Chilton was a personal friend of, and painted with, Robert Wood (1889 – 1979) during the 1920’s and 30’s. Mr. Wood also enjoyed painting the subject of Texas landscapes including specifically Texas Bluebonnets. (Wood’s paintings have sold for as much as $45,000 at auction). Demand for Alice Chilton is evidenced by sale prices including $7,638 paid for “Texas Bluebonnets” lot # 251 at Skinner Inc. Auction House, Bolton, Mass. on November 18, 2005. Circa 1920s - 30s.
