| Elegant and artistic “Reclining Nude” by Jan Hoowij – signed upper right demonstrates his evocative master talent. Dimensions: 36” X 24” (39” X 27.5” with frame). Circa 1953. Hoowij, born in Holland and attended the Royal Academy of Fine and Applied Arts in the Hague and the Academie Grande Chaumière, Paris. He later escaped his occupied homeland in 1939 and lived in London and then emigrated to New York then moved to California. His works have been exhibited in Museums throughout the world including the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, the Brooklyn Museum and the Carnegie Institute in Pittsburg. Hoowij won the Therese Van Duyl Schwartz Prize for Best Portrait in Holland in 1936 and the purchase prize at the Witte Memorial Museum in 1959. Strong demand for Hoowij works is evidenced by the wholesale dealer auction sale price of $5,110 ($10.98/sq. inch) for “Composition” (31” X 15”) Lot # 109 at Sotheby’s Amsterdam on May 23th, 2006.
