Oil Painting James Lee Colt 1922 – 2005 Western "Movin'
“Movin'em Out” oil on board, signed James Colt (lower left). James L. Colt (1922 – 2005) was born James Lee Clutter in Kansas City, Missouri. He changed his name to James Colt in 1977. His work has been exhibited in the National Art Club of New York as a charter member of Pastel Society of America and in the American Watercolor Society shows at the National Academy galleries in New York. He attributes his concentration on the 1870 era in his western paintings to his family history. His great grandfather was in the cavalry in the Civil War. His grand parents entered Oklahoma Territory to participate in the opening of the Cherokee Strip, and an uncle was a Rough Rider with Teddy Roosevelt at San Juan. Formally trained Colt earned his A.A. and B.A. in classical art and later developed his own unique impressionist style. Circa late 1970s. Dimensions: 36” X 30.5” with frame, 30” X 24” without. Strong demand for James Colt’s western themed pieces include the wholesale dealer professional auction price of $3,900 – ($6.33/square inch) for “On the Mogollon Rim” lot 189 at Bonhams & Butterfields Los Angeles on April 8th, 2008 and $3,300 ($10.31/sq. inch) "Herding Steers" lot # 60 at Bonhams & Butterfields San Francisco on August 7th, 2007. Using these comparable sales price per square inch values of $6.33 - $10.31, the comparable price range for this piece is $4,557 - $7,423. Don’t miss this change to own a celebrated Western Master at a great value.
