| Beautiful 19th Century antique French champleve enamel crucifix, mounted on beautiful copper backed onyx (including wall hang ring), with matching champleve holy water font below with hinged lid. Circa 1830s. Dimensions: 12” X 7” X 3”. Champleve is a highly labor intensive delicate artistic technique of decorating metal, began by the Celts during the early Roman Empire and became the favorite of European Nobility from the 11th Century on, in which areas that have been hollowed out, by incising, are filled with pulverized colored enamel and fired, repeatedly (once for each color).
