| Superlative quality antique French Napoleon III ormolu mounted, brass inlaid ebonized desk, signed with the Joseph Cremer Hallmark (see photo), circa 1850. Joseph Cremer (1830-1878) the specialist marqueteur who developed a highly distinctive style of inlaid decoration, became famous for his complicated and ambitious designs. He was elected as a member of 'L'Academie de l'Industrie' and his works are included in the collection of the Musee d'Orsay in Paris. Commissioned by Louis Philippe and the King of Holland, Cremer won medals in 1839, 1844, 1849 and 1852 at World’s Fairs, including the 'la médaille d'honeur' at the Paris Exposition Universelle. The desk is raised by straight fluted tapered legs decorated by ormolu sabots and chased bands. The legs are joined by an ‘X’ stretcher with chased brass ormolu accents. The desktop and locking cabinet doors are inlaid with artistic handmade intricate Nature themed brass design (key included). The gallery topped walnut lined cabinet complemented with ormolu accents and elegant inlaid brass boarder lines, surmounts fine dove tailed twin drawers. The striking ormolu highlighted front draw includes a gold embossed leather topped pull out (or push out of the way) writing desk surface. Dimensions: 52.5” h. X 30” w. X 19.5” d.
