This antique white porcelain pie vent, pie bird or pie funnel was made in the late Victorian or early Edwardian period and dates to the 1890-1910. The pie vent measures 3 inches high by 1.25 inches in diameter and was made in Staffordshire, England and I got it in the Potteries district recently. The pie vent is unusual as it is porcelain and not stoneware and is in very good condition but does have a chipped rim. There is some crusting around the chimney as it was obviously used. A fun piece. And practical! Pie birds were developed in the 1500s to release steam from a baking pie so the filling didn't boil over.
