This antique carpet ball or carpet bowl is over 100 years old and is of original glazed hard fired clay. The design is an interesting one of white and black plaid. Plaid was a favorite of Queen Victoria and this ball dates from 186-1890 during the victorian age. The carpet ball is about 3.5 inches in diameter and is quite heavy. The condition is very good. It has been used, and has some glaze flaws some of which were done during manufacture because of the smoothness of the surface and as these balls go it's in very good condition. There are the usual tiny circle dents where the ball has been hit hard. Carpet balls were developed during the reign of Queen Victoria--1832-1901--as a form of outdoor bowls to be played in the parlor. Original balls are very hard to find. These took me over a year. Currently they are valued not only as victoriana but as a decorative accent. Shipping in the US by USPS priority insured is $10.90.
