This is a J G Meakin, England crescent bone dish or curved salad dish made 1907-1912. The crescent salad or bone dish is a molded ironstone with a sepia transfer or transferware floral with hand painted accents and gold foliage and trim. The crescent dish or bone dish measures .8 inch high by 6.5 inches long by 4 inches wide and is in very good +++ condition. There are no chips or cracks and only very minor gold wear and a few bits of kiln dust which is normal in ironstone of this age.
Crescent dishes were developed by the victorians to sit by the dinner plate and collect the bones of the meal. They are used now for salads, sauces, sushi at the dinner table. I keep my glasses in one at night by the bedside. I also use one on my desk for paper clips. The desk doesn't have to be boring! Shipping in the US by USPS priority insured.
