Mayan Warrior With Flayed Skin Mask
Seen here is a stone head from the Classic Mayan period, showing a warrior wearing the flayed skin of an enemy as a mask. The face and sometimes entire upper body were occasionally worn in ceremonial fashion. Note the wearer's eyes under the more large eye openings, and the wearer's lips inside the mask's mouth. Provenance- Ex. Leslie Borenstein from the mid-1960's. 2" x 1 3/4".
