| Large black glazed lekanis with applied decoration in white and umber. The lid has a large knob handle and is decorated on each side with the head of a lady of fashion. Between the two heads are large palmettes. The base is plain black glazed save for an umber band just above the foot. Dates from Apulian Greece, ca. 275-250 BC. Piece shows beautifully with the type of "silvering" that you love to see in these Greek Apulian pieces. Lid is intact, save for two small chips at the bottom edge of the lid. The base has some repair, nicely done. Diameter across the handles is 22.8 cms, or 9.1 inches. Ex. Welsh private collection. (Ferris Collection) | ||
