| A bust of the goddess Astarte, Circa Canaanite to Pre-Canaanite period. Composed of buff terracotta, being approximately 3 1/2 inches in height with the walnut base. An old collection tag states "Baidun Shop Jerusalem, Jordan, May 1967". This shop is still in existance. I was able to contact Alan Baidun, one of the current owners. He was quite pleased to see the tag accompanying the piece. He pointed out that the tag reads "Jerusalem, Jordan" meaning that Jerusalem was at this time under Jordan's control. During May of 1967 the Israelis ejected the United Nations Force from the area. This was just before the "Six Day War" began against Egypt, Jordan and Syria. An interesting piece with an interesting history. | ||
