The main theme of the icon is the ascension of the prophet to the heavens in a Chariot. The Christian tradition considers that the prophet was taken to heavens alive. 2 Kings 2:11 reads, “… behold, there appeared a chariot of fire, and horses of fire, and parted them both asunder; and Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven.”
