This beautiful "tray" was used in the Qing dynasty by artists and scholars either to "dry" their brushes or as a palette for their inks. The rosewood is elaborately carved with insects associated with water, a prominent pair of beetles facing each other may be seen. They rest on a flat lotus leaf of 33 sections. It has been carved out at the petals. There are no discernible defects.

$7500

Palm wood brushpots are very rare. I believe I have only seen one, in the collection of a well-known American collector. None ever seen in the Beijing market. The grain is fantastic: the basic color is dark brown, but there are orange stripes throughout. This is one piece of palmwood; the base is not added in, but has been the base since the pot was made. This pot is 19.5 cm at the diameter, 20 cm high; and weighs 2.8 kg. A somewhat larger one, 21.5 cm high and 23.5 cm at the diameter, was ...click for details

This is a huge ceramic Boar for the Year of the Boar This could be very old. It was sold to me many years as Han or Tang, but ceramics is not my world. The glaze covers most of him, there are a few chips here and there but it is a very strong boar.

This is a paperweight of a stone I do not know. It is well-carved into a Buddha's hand, no seeming defects. There is a little lizard elegantly carved on the top of the "hand". It is made of Qingtian (Chingtian) stone, which comes from Zhejiang, in East China. Qingtian has a long history in China, it is an important even famous stone. It is warm to the touch, it has a stand for viewing.

This is a huanghuali huacha. That literally means it is a flower (bud) vase but could also hold incense sticks, small tools, etc. As the photos show, this is two pieces: the main cylinder is 14 cm tall, the feet are another 1 cm. The diameter is 5 cm at the top, about 4.5 cm at the bottom. The piece is thus beautifully almost not noticeably tapered from top to bottom. The separate plug (seems like a spoon of sorts)in frame 7 is 2.5 cm tall with a diameter of 2 cm. No defects to report This dat ...click for details
