A large monkey and a baby monkey on a beautifully carved wooden toggle. The base is a swirl design of a spreading lotus leaf on which the monkeys sit. The boxwood is wonderfully patinated.

During the Qihg dynasty the government issued coins for each reign period. Wood carvers produced wooden copies of the metal coins. Here are images of Wooden coins of the the Jiaqing, Daoguang and Tongzhi periods. The reverse side seems to be in Manchu script but as I do not read it, I cannot tell what it actually says. Left side one is 500 and the right side on is not for sale.  

I obtained these two boxwood toggles in Beijing from the same dealer – albeit the two purchases were spearhead by 10 years. The one on the left is in very good condition but it has been washed. The right is older, has a viable nick in his lower jaw and is very dynamic. Each one has a ball in his mouth, a Buddhist “tiling’. The balls may be simulated tongues – to make the sound of a frog croaking.
