This is a very delicate zitan tray, with wire inlay all over the top. It was probably used as a tray for setting down brushes, inkstones and other scholar's objects. The zitan is quite thin, the piece is in excellent condition. It has a most interesting "provenance". It was made in China, exported to Japan. There, a box was made to store it, as well as a cotton pouch. An inscription in Japanese is in the box. It came back to China within the past decade. It is about 13 cm lon ...click for details

This is a perfect pair of blue and white wine warmer cups. The cover and base fit, the small inner cup also has blue glaze. The set is from an old Hong Kong Collection; I acquired this pair many years ago. Today, finding all 3 pieces in old sets: virtually impossible.
The wine warmer set is used thusly: a bottle of already heated rice wine is brought to the table; its contents are poured into large wine warmer pot OR directly into the little porcelain cups shown here. The larger container i ...click for details

This is an elegant beautifully carved modest sized brushpot. Diameter 8 cm , height 9.5 cm The zitan is carved in a lotus pattern, the pewter edging and base have been affixed to follow that pattern. Huanghuali 14 cm x 14 cm x 14. 5 cm This is a classic late Ming style, elegantly carved at the top and the bottom. At the top, there is a firm line just below the mouth of the pot. The pot then tapers to the bottom where a complex set of lines sets off the bottom. The base of the pot is one large piece of wood. Although the pot has been refinished, the inside and the base were un-touched, proof of the pot's age. It is classic huanghuali.

This is a one of a kind intricate brushpot or even a scroll pot. It is made of some undetermined wood, the pattern is very exciting. It is carved to resemble a section of a forest, with trees, vines and whatever, all jumbled together. The whole effect is one of fantasy, it is "very un-Chinese" but also very Chinese. While hundreds of brushpots can be found that are elegantly plain, this one is elegantly wild. There cannot be more than this one in Beijing, or elsewhere. Some young Be ...click for details

This is an elegant folding ruler, many rulers are fairly simple straight-edged pieces. Here each piece of zitan is 16.5 cm long, they are joined by an old brass fastener. This ruler probably dates to the mid-19th Century at the latest. Condition is very good, a few nicks from wear and tear. Rulers are classified in Wood from the Scholar's Table as scholar's art.

This is a very good box for holding various scholar's objects. There are places for an inkpaste box on the right, a square place perhaps for seal or seals, next to it, and a long-ish place for inksticks. Each side is carved with lotus flowers, the Buddhist symbol of purity. It is 15 cm x 15 cm x 5.5 cm (length, width and height). There are a few minor nicks due to wear; otherwise the whole piece is in excellent condition and has fine patina. It was produced in in the middle of the 19th Cen ...click for details
