From the Yoruba Tribe in Nigeria comes this striking Ifa Divination Cup. Through Ifa, diviners interrogate the spirit world on behalf of their followers so that they may know their destiny. The cup is a maternity figure showing a child -- with its head turned to its left -- holding on to its mother. The face of mother exhibits the typical serenity found in good Yoruba sculpture. Traces of camwood are evident all over sculpture. Height: 13 inches (33cm), Diameter: 6 inches (15.5cm).

This small sculpture was field collected two years ago from an old Luguru witch doctor in the Morogoro area, who said that it had belonged to his grandfather, also a witch doctor, who had used it as an anti-sorcery power piece. However, the current owner of the sculpture no longer used it for this purpose, and it had been sitting in his hut unused for decades. Furthermore, it was the only piece he was willing to sell. Deaccessioned from the Metropolitan Museum, purchased by Arte Primitivo from the museum, and purchased from Arte Primitivo in 1998. The entire bowl, including the two yoked oxen carved in high relief, was carved from one single very old piece of wood. 11 inches (28 cm) across by 3 inches (8 cm) high. Very Good Condition.

Late 19th to Early 20th century Nyamwezi puppet. Very well patinated and made of a very hard wood. This was an articulated puppet that has lost its arms and legs. Such puppets may have performed at an elder's funeral, with a relative speaking "through" the puppet, recounting the life and deeds of the recently deceased.
