A pair of articulated puppets riding (an animal?) from the Kulango tribe. Might represent a male (front) and female (rear). Made of wood, hand-woven and hand-dyed cloth, cowrie shells, and what appears to be a patina of sacrificial libations. The cross-piece the puppets are "riding" can swivel somewhat up and down, but it is uncertain what function these sculptures performed in Kulango society. The Kulango are neighbors of the better documented Baule in the Cote d'Ivorie. Heigh ...click for details

From the Ibibio Tribe comes this unusual and striking mask with three faces. Above the main face of the mask sits a fabulous Janus (two-faced head). This mask has all the signs of considerable age, heavy patination on the front and extensive wear on the back, and has been repainted many times over the years with both earth pigments and oil paint. These many layers of paint are a sign of extensive use in a traditional context. 17.5"(44.5cm)H. Very Good Condition.

A Bamana door lock showing a female figure. The head on this piece compares stylistically to Figure Number 50 in African Sculpture by James Johnson Sweeney, the catalog of the famous and historical African Art Show at the Museum of Modern Art in 1935. It is very uncommon to see door locks with carved bases, but this piece was never a sculpture that was later "converted" to a door lock; this was intended to be a door lock from the start. Clearly, this lock was used for some time, as th ...click for details

Baule Mask with outside surface encrusted with sacrificial materials and feathers. Inside of mask shows patina in the right areas, demonstrating that the mask was repeatedly worn and danced in. It is possible that this mask was later retired from active dancing, and placed in a shrine. This would account for the repeated sacrificial libations which have built up on the surface. A very good mask of its kind, and one not commonly seen. Height of mask: 16 inches, 40.5 cm.
