mummy of a baboon , Egypt ,with radiography and scann
An egyptian mummy of a baboon, old belgian collection . Egyptians mummified animals for one of two reasons. Either they were ensuring that a beloved pet could follow them into the afterlife, or the mummies were for those gods who had a specific animal cult. For example, Horus was worshipped as a hawk or falcon, Hathor as a cow, and Bastet as a cat. Mummies of these animals were thus left as offerings at the respective temples.Baboons also represented Thoth, the god of the moon as well as the god of wisdom. The appearance of baboons on canopic jars, which housed the organs of human mummies, is testament of the animals’ tremendous cultural significance. Baboons were reared in mass quantities at temples, though the numbers of baboon mummies that have been discovered are not as large as cats or ibises. Around 400 were uncovered at the tombs of Saqqara. Most baboons were mummified with the use of plaster and buried in wooden chests. Baboon mummies that have been discovered have provided significant evidence that they were bred and mummified as offerings. This evidence includes proof that the baboons usually did not die from natural causes, and that the majority suffered from malnutrition, fractures, osteomylitis, and vitamin D deficiency. some embalmers at the ancient time would put only a piece of bone as they knew the pilgrim would not check inside so cheating dates yet from a long time ..... we hesitate between a dog and a baboon ,but if you see the scann on enlargment 2 the teeth are too pointed to be a dog . if anybody knows ,advices are welcome the family where it comes from always considered it as a baboon
