Two piece cedar (sugi) tobacco box, oblong shape. Part of a Japanese kiseru set. Top and bottom have holes on both sides where a cord would attach this piece to the pipe case (missing). Beautiful patina and just the way it is, a wonderful container.  3 1/4" H x 4 1/2" W x 2" D. Meiji, Japanese.

Iron oil lamp with three legs and hook supporting a leaf shaped vessel with heart shaped holder. Simple, elegant and functional. The aged patina tells all, much used and appreciated. In a contemporary setting, a candle or a flower can easily grace this very wabi-sabi object. Japanese, Edo period, 19th century. 7 3/4" tall x 5 3/4 wide x 3 1/2" deep.  Hook, 4 1/4" long.

Rare Document case made of bamboo with bronze hinges, top and bottom. Created with hexagonal twill plaiting technique. Inside has black lining of mulberry fibre prepared with the juice of persimmon and waterproofed with hard-drying oil, much like the material use for kimono stencils. Most likely a creation of a master artist in bamboo. Care and delicate handling brought out the incredible rich patina. Definitely owned by an affluent merchant or a very important person. Five pelicans on a bridge with what looks like persimmons in their mouths. The pelicans and bridge are made of celluloid going over water depicted in wood. A charming and unusual image wonderfully executed. Japanese, c. 1940. 6 1/2" long x 3/4" deep x 1 1/2" tall .  Pelican: 1/2" tall x 1/4" wide.

Ricksaw driver with a woman passenger. Amazing detail of the rickshaw, the driver's hat and Japanese lady in kimono holding a bag and probably a fan (missing) in the other hand. The back of the ricksaw seat has a scenery image of Mt. Fuji. The wheels are articulated. Celluloid, Japanese, c. 1940. 3" x 3", figures are about 2".

Basket for Ikebana, the art of flower arrangement. "Bird's Nest" style: overlapping plaiting of dark bamboo strips underneath, uneven twig-like bamboo circling the bulbous body creating an image of a nest. Bamboo rope twisted around the plaited handle. A most unusual work by a very gifted artist. Taisho period. 16 1/2" tall x 14" diameter with 7" opening.
