Used to protect horses from mosquito and insect bites as well as dirt and mud. Eventually, it was used for festivals and rituals. Bold tsutsugaki, handpainted paste resist stripes on cotton; red kanji that reads "rice" on blue background. Very good condition. Meiji period, 19th c. 75" long x 13" wide

This item has been sold; please inquire about other horse trappings and textiles. Literally, "horse belly covering". Originally made to protect horses from mosquito and other insect bites as well as from dirt and mud, it evolved into festival and ritual use. Wealthy merchants and samurai adorned their horses with richly decorated covers on special occasions. This type of haragake is called yuiage ("tied up"). The central portion covered the belly of the horse and the long panels divided in two at both ends, which were tied on the back and left hanging along the flanks. Tsutsugaki hand painted paste resist double mon with chrysanthemums on each corner, framed with two borders. Tsutsugaki stripe flaps on both sides. Imari porcelain haisen. Painting inside of an Ikebana arrangement on a stand, blue flowers edged in gold and gold flowers edged in red. Vase and stand in blue edged with gold. Scalloped rim of gold, outside body is decorated with stylized painting of flowers. The traditional use of a haisen is for washing sake cups. Beautiful condition with no losses in painting. Inside has a tiny flaw in the firing, but no cracks or chips. Meiji period, 19th century. 6" wide x 4 1/2" high

Haisens were used for washing sake cups. Blue and white painting of opened and closed fans inside the bowl. The open fans have landscape painting on them. The outside body has more painting of closed and opened fans. Rim has thick indentations all around. Delicate paintings, yet the vessel is very hefty. Signs of use and age, in very good condition. Late Meiji period, c 1910-1920. 5 3/4" wide x 4 1/2" high
