Japanese lacquer set of six dishes, each with a design of three oblongs, depicting birds, bridges and trees with buildings and each with a different juxtaposition of the oblongs. The gold decoration is in a variety of techniques; parts are absolutely flush with the ground(togidashi), whilst, here and there, the decoration is in raised low relief(takamakie). A Japanese Satsuma vase of tapering ovoid form very finely decorated and gilt with a continuous panorama showing a figure leading a tethered horse across a bridge before a background of shrines and pavilions. The decoration moves on to depict a riverscape , mountains, and dense foliage. The detailed meticulous work is an excellent example of Meiji craftsmanship. A superbly carved and exquisitely detailed figure of the goddess gatten standing with her attendant and a hare. The fine pleats, folds and tassels of the garments, the delicately engraved and tinted fabrics, they all bear witness to the artisan's virtuosity of execution. age: Meiji C. 189. size: 3 5/16in. A good Meiji earthenware example,this Satsuma covered bowl bears the Kyoto mark and is decorated with panels depicting samurai, maidens and gentlemen with the interior showing a flower spray beside a teapot, Mt. Fuji and pagodas on the water front. The base bears a gilt on black rectangle: KYOTO MARK.
Age: Meiji period, last quarter of the 19th Century.
Size: 5in (12.5cm) diameter.
Condition: Very good gilt and colour, no restoration, no breaks. a tiny chip on the inner lip of the cover.
