Chinese ivory box with open work carving
A Chinese ivory box carved in openwork , the four sides and top panels with intricate and detailed panoramas of pagodas, pavilions, mountains, lakes and fishermen in boats. The borders show squirrels, vines and rats amongst foliage - an unusual choice of subject matter. This style of open work , which entails piercing through two layers, in order to achieve a life-like tableau, needs a masterly command of the craft and therefore is uncommon and sought- after. The interior of this box is lined with silk. Age: early 19 C. size: 7 1/2 inches (19cm x 4 1/4 inches (11 cm) x 3 1/4 inches 8.5cm high. condition: several old restorations and an age-related crack on the base- as seen in the images. We can obtain CITES EXPORT LICENCE, if necessary 2/3 weeks.
