Visagapatam Indian writing box inlaid
An Indian writing box ( scribe's box)from the Visagapatam region , it is made of rosewood and inlaid with ivory and bone on the cover and four sides. These decorations are inspired by the local flora and foliage . The inlays are engraved and then stained black. The interior which is in the original condition is plain; two vertical struts secure the cover( about 1 inch of the top ends missing). There are divisions within the box; two of them on the sides being covered by flaps whilst the central compartment is accessed by lifting another flap. The interesting feature is that no metal hinges are used and the covers operate on pivots. The pictures show darker yellowing than is the case in the actual item .Age: C. 1800. size: 12 1/4inches (31cm) x 9 1/4inches(23.5cm) x 3 3/4inches (9.5cm) high.condition; general wear and tear, the corner of the base with a small nick,age-related fissures as seen in the photos.
