Chinese mother of pearl gaming counter box
A magnificent Chinese box for gaming counters veneered in mother of pearl , the cover with a carved panel depicting birds in dense foliage, a vacant cartouche and a border enclosing oblong vignettes. The sides are similarly decorated and rope work edging completes the scenes. There are five boxes inside for the counters and nine have survived. We date this box to C. 1750 both on account of style and the pattern of "valentine" decoration on four boxes and the counters. This "billing birds" design dates to Captain Anson 's stay in Hong Kong and his famous dinner service.Provenance: formerly the Guise family, Elmore court, Gloucestershire, England. This is a very desirable and collectable box.size: 10 1/8inches (25.7cm) x 5 3/4 inches (14.5cm) x 2 1/4inches ( 5.7cm)high. condition: very good considering its age; there are some old repairs to the corners of some of the inside boxes, also a few of the rims are plain and not decorated with incised design.
