| An ivory miniature of Emperor Akbar in a "Delhi shellac" frame.According to some recent research, this type of image with its exaggerated facial features was made for the Mughal Court rather than export European taste- a kind of retrospective nostalgic homage to the earlier and more glorious times. It is finely detailed and enhanced with gilt touches. The equally unusually frame is made from walnut and coated with black "Delhi shellac", a technique which was employed in the making of games and toys for the Delhi Court and not for frames as such.A further uncommon feature is the application of raised gilt tarkashi wire which can be seen glinting in several places where the age old wax and polish has been rubbed. With further cleaning, it can come out shiny. We place the miniature and the frame to about 1820- 1840 .Condition is very good, the back does show its age. size: the miniature is : 2 3/4inches (7cm) x 2 inches (5cm). the frame is: 7 1/2 inches(20.5cm) x 6 1/2inches( 17cm) x 1 inch(2.5cm) thick. | ||||||||
