| A Chinese soapstone (shou shan stone) seal carved very finely with a Buddhistic lion and his young atop a rectangular plinth which is carved lightly in low relief with panel of flowers and birds. The colour of the stone is very close to that of the pictures and the quality of carving is detailed and precise.Standing at 8 3/4 inches (22.5cm), it is a substantial and impressive item. The base is inscribed with blessings and benediction and bears yellowish wax residue.Age: 19 C. condition: good, there is a natural faultline in the stone running from one face of a plinth down to the base and up the other side.It is visible in the close-up of the images I am showing.As seen, there are several "nibbles" to the edge of the base- this is quite common in such seals of the period. | |||||||||||||||
